South by Southeast: Art from Singapore, an exhibition that showcases 5 contemporary artists from Singapore. Their works express different ideologies and discourse through varies approaches and mediums such as video, installation, painting and photography. To some extent, they represent the surge of diversity in Singapore art now.
'The World is Flat' by Thomas L. Friedman analyses that globalisation is neither just a phenomenon nor a short-term movement. It is the trend of world development. This trend is a combination of capital , information and technology, including the integration of arts and culture .
In Art Basel Hong Kong 2016, it is difficult to distinguish the origin of the artists without looking at their names. Works from artists have become more international and established collectors now collect works globally. In recent years, many outstanding works of art from different parts of the world have been brought in by private museums and galleries in China. And through the arts, we are able to build a vibrant and connected global community as cultural integration is the best way to communicate.
It is an honour to have these 5 Singapore artists with us, at Yibo Gallery. This is one of the first group exhibition that invites solely Singapore artists to Shanghai. We hope that the public will learn something about Singapore, gain an insight into the Singapore visual arts and also take this platform to promote cultural exchange between China and Singapore.

3000cm by 30cm (38 scrolls total)

Chinese ink on sumi paper

Throughout Chinese history, there are many great masters who depicted waterfalls. In this work, I wanted to create my own version of waterfall by using

the technique of dipping only, abandoning the use of the Chinese ink brush. By experimenting with various angles of dipping, different containers of

various densities of ink, and six to seven different ink brands, I aimed to achieve a different visual effect for each scroll. When you look at each scroll, it is

like looking at different video stills of the waterfall.

“Every piece of the artwork is created by the song "We are Singapore" itself. I might helped by pouring graphite power and water onto blasting speaker membranes and catching the spills and vibrations on paper, but the real artist was the sound." Shih Yun

For such a young country to be where it is in the world in only 50 years is remarkable and certainly worth celebrating. Everyone should celebrate. Everyone has benefited from living here and everyone should mark this notable achievement that not many countries in the modern era have the chance to do, celebrate real achievement. As an artist, I feel very fortunate to be based in Singapore.

My way to celebrate is to use music and my art to create this special series of works. This series uses a national song which is familiar to all Singaporeans as the main source of inspiration. Music is also an important part of my painting process. It is always at the background. When and how a mark is made is influenced by the rhythm, tempo, mood of the music at the moment. Still using black, but now, music is the artist and the artist is the instrument. The start of the series of works is start of the song and when the song ends, the works are finished.

After that, the marks made by the music are scanned digitally and then selected by the artist and printed on circled shaped plexiglass which reminds us of the vital role of the speakers.
